Well due to people complaining about background noise when I'm on teamspeak I'm looking to get myself a headset.
A lot of websites have far too many different brands and prices, and it seems each one is usually a love it or hate it product. So... if you have a headset what is it and what would you recommend?

Just grab a cheap pair with a built in mic....nothing fancy about it.

I'm using a logitech 350 www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID=10013 Yes I know its a usa link but its got the specs for them. Lots of people online complain about the cheapy sets hurting their ears and breaking easily so you may not want to go that route.

That looks nice Raddic, although I don't want to get a USB one as I may as well use my rediculously powerful sound card now that I have it. I did find this, which I'll probably get if I don't find a really bad review on it in the next couple of days.

I am a newbe to TS; just had my first night with the headset on. I went fairly well after getting the settings right. I bought it yesterday. It is a Gembird 5.1 Channel USB headset. I used the automatic voice activation and got no complaints about the sounds (or heavy breathing..... ). And the padding on the earpieces is nice; my ears were still in place with the right colour after 4 hours. Had long hairs growing out of them though...... Perhaps you can check it out and compare to others.

I got a cheap one that I am borrowing from work. Works fairly well, even after the cord got chewed on by the vacuum. May look for a more comfortable one eventually.
Edit: We weren't complaining, just letting you know, and seeing if you could change something to help it go away. You don't have to go and buy something just b/c of us. Cheerio!

I only got onto the Teamspeak for the first time ever last night with the help of Hadus helping me to set it all up - It was great.
I have now gone out and bought two new headsets, one for Dana and one for Digi - they are the Logitech 250's.
PS: It might pay for one of the more 'techie' scouts to post a seperate thread in the Computer Issues section on how to set up the Teamspeak system with all of its settings, passwords and which client to install etc, with links as well, as the ones i found were scattered all over the place, plus i did'nt know if they were up to date.

Yes....towel mention this also. If Jaxx, Towel or someone else doesn't get around to it before I do then I'll clean that section up a bit. It's been great to put voices to the players.... . Dana...does Digi play also? You two sounded like you were having great fun there...

I might pick up a Headset on Wednesday. You all sounded like you were having fun on TS during the UW trip this weekend and I want to join in too Even if I probably won't talk very much. I agree that a little guide for setting it up would be nice though. I haven't a clue about how to set it up so I can talk on it.

If it means anything to you Towel, I've got a "non-standard" sound card but use a USB headset. Also consider where it has to plug in, whether you've got the ports on the front of your case or in the back. I know that on my case, the front-panel audio plug isn't hooked up to my sound card. I think it's meant for on-board audio. (yeck)
I recommend Logitech and Plantronics, as far as brands go. Sensenheimer (sp?) if you're looking to get the high-end stuff, but then you're talking $75 US and up. Which is more than most people want, aside from audiophiles and uber music junkies. I believe my Plantronics model, a mid-range one, is around $40 US now.
The last thing to consider is actual sound quality. A cheap one will do you fine if you're only using it for TS, but a quality pair would be better if you use them as headphones. (something I do a lot to avoid blasting loud FPS gun battles or loud GW action across the entire house)

Heh, with my luck around the vacuum, maybe I should look at wireless.
Edit: Ack, no. Wireless is too expensive.

No worries Cerryl, it's just one more reason why I wanted one. And that time your attempt at Britishness was obvious. I only got onto the Teamspeak for the first time ever last night with the help of Hadus helping me to set it all up - It was great. Heh a couple of people said you were online, I look forward to hearing you. I had the impression you were of the anti-teamspeak inclination. It might pay for one of the more 'techie' scouts to post a seperate thread in the Computer Issues section on how to set up the Teamspeak system Yeah I was bugging Hadus to move a bunch of the technical threads over here. I can write a guide for teamspeak, we'll just have to deal with two copies of the connection info lying around.
Anyway, I've ordered that set I posted above, so just waiting on delivery now.

Towel, I think an 'Idiots Guide to Teamspeak' would be just what we needed. I do not know enough about it to write one.
I was reluctant at first to try TS. This was mainly as I belive in the RPG side of the game and to hear a male talking while playing as a female character sort of shatters the illusion a bit. Mercia assured me last night, that you soon forget about that. So we'll see.

Well, Dana, at least we have a pretty face to put with that voice. It could be the other way around. ;D
We need some women playing male characters, that would be funny on TS.

Heh heh, one thing to count on, you won't ever hear Jane's real voice on GW!
Its gonna be interesting when I start playing GW again, if all of you are migrating to talking and listening instead of typing. Oh well, I can put some music on ......

You should find one of those programs that can play with how your voice sounds. Doubt there are any free ones though.

I found this site linked on another forum I read. It looks like it's still in development for headsets but here it is in case it's any use to anyone: www.headphone.com/

Walmart Ftw. I have a logitec headset with built in mike that is really great. I think it was 15 dollars.
I understand the Scouts do not really use TS much. I would encourage members to use it more often. It really is a much better way to communicate efficiently in missions and quests. I don't know how many times I've been killed while trying to type a message by hitting the wrong key, like the "R" key when I think I'm typing and instead run off into the middle of a group of Afflicted.
Also, it 'connects' members in a much more meaningful and personal way. One of the things I enjoyed about a couple of the old guilds I was in, was their use of TS or Vent for regular communication. 90% of the time there were members on, not necessarily doing anything together as a group but just talking.
TS is VERY easy to use, it is much more intuitive than Ventrillo and the sound is fine. I've heard people complain about the sound quality of TS over Vent, but I've never been able to discerne much of a difference. It's usually the user, and not the program, that's got the settings messed up or a crappy mike or bad soundcard.
Anyway, I ramble.
