More free stuff: BonkEncA great CD ripper. Rips them to mp3s, lets you choose the encoding method and doesn't put any nasty DRM on them. Foxit PDF ReaderA lightweight free PDF viewer that loads up almost instantly and doesn't take over your system. PicasaA photo album application by Google. Lets you organise, print, publish to web, compress and email, touch up, make collages, order prints, etc. Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla ThunderbirdTwo great standards-compliant alternatives to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (but not Outlook).

Ok, here are some of my entries (I will modify this post as I remember some other goodies and find their links, so please keep coming back). Hardisk monitor and test software, very good, does not overtake your OS on install: www.hdtune.comDVD burning software. Makes ISO images from files, then burns them to your DVD. A very well made software which does not anchor itself into your OS when installed. In other words, it works extremely well and is totally non-intrusive. Works well with dvd-decryptor or dvd-shrink to copy your favorite DVD films. www.imgburn.comMy current antivirus: Can't figure the business plan out on this one, for me it is totally free, never have paid a license nor had a stop in the daily updates but it looks from their website and advertisements that they would love ya to go "pro" for some money. I haven't bothered. www.avira.comAn image file viewer that has a very nice user interface and is totally non-intrusive to your OS. I use this on Linux for which it has been developed, but it is now ported to Windows and has become my favorite there. Anyone still using ACeeDSee, that freebie software that has become overly heavy (too many features, too automatic) and which insists on creating databases that will fill up your hardisk in no time (and which you cannot very easilly remove, and which you don't even maybe know about)? ACeeDsee is a perfect example of software that I never wish to have on my computer. GQview on the other hand is light and doesn't interfere. On the other hand, there are still some porting quirks, where some things don't exactly work as they ought to. gqview-win.sourceforge.net/Another alternative image viewer, which we use at work, is totally open source and free. Also quite good, allows for batch manipulations of image files (like cropping or resizing all the images in a directory for example). For viewing, I like GQview better, and for batch image manips I use "convert" on Linux, but Irfanview is a good softawre: www.irfanview.comIf you want an absolutely free open source alternative to photoshop for real image manipulations, there is a port of the Gimp from Linux to Windows. This program does just about everything that photoshop an except demand licensing fees. But it is more complicated to use, and installing it and GQview at the same time may give conflicts due to the version of a second library that may need to be installed on your Windows box. gimp-win.sourceforge.net/A good music CD ripper that is totally free to use with no limitations. Rip to MP3 or WMA format, perhaps others using plugins. cdexos.sourceforge.net/

Heh heh, well, this has nothing to do with anything that any of you guys would ever dream of using or needing to help fulfill your gaming happiness, but it is a darn good piece of software that is absolutely open source and free: www.scilab.org/It is basically for data analysis and many many related things. The freebie Matlab.
